Since last Wednesday, fishing licence processing in the Canary Islands has faced significant disruptions due to a cyberattack. This incident has left officers unable to process these licences. We gathered updates on the situation during our visit to the Gran Canaria fishing office this morning. The officers say the fishing licence processing issues will be resolved within a week.

The article from the Government of the Canary Islands’ website reports that GMR Canarias, a public company, is gradually restoring its IT systems following a cyberattack on the night of September 17, 2024. The attack affected the company’s servers and internal systems. The company’s security team immediately activated response protocols. They contacted the National Cryptologic Center (CCN) and relevant authorities to manage the situation. Cybersecurity specialists have controlled the attack, and they are actively working to restore the affected systems, prioritizing critical ones to ensure service continuity and secure recovery.
Specialists notified the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, and Food Sovereignty immediately after the attack. It activated its security protocols in coordination with the Directorate General of Digital Transformation of Public Services. Juan Antonio Alonso, the CEO of GMR Canarias, stated that the company is constantly communicating with clients and suppliers to inform them of the incident’s impact on operations and collaborations. They will update users, clients, and suppliers as more information becomes available.
